When school lets out for the summer, GESD’s commitment to its scholars doesn't pause-it steps up to the plate, serving more than 20,000 free, nutritious meals to local families this season.
Through a combination of convenient onsite meal locations and flexible pickup initiatives, the Gloversville Enlarged School District has created a seamless safety net for local families. Onsite meal service operated across three district school buildings, offering fresh daily breakfasts and lunches to scholars participating in summer learning and enrichment programs.
Recognizing that summer schedules and transportation can present hurdles, GESD also provided a weekly meal pickup program. Families received multi-day meal packages packed with wholesome ingredients, fresh fruits, and vegetables designed to meet federal nutrition standards while keeping kids nourished all week long.
Behind the scenes, the effort required seamless collaboration across every corner of our district.
"Our summer meals program is about much more than food," said School Lunch Director Jeffrey Bartone. "It is about supporting the health and well-being of children in our community and ensuring they have access to nutritious meals even when school is not in session. We are proud of the impact this program has on our families, serving more than 20,000 meals during the summer months and are grateful to everyone who helped make it a success."
District leadership echoed that pride, pointing to the immense teamwork required to pull off a project of this scale.
"Serving more than 20,000 meals in a single summer is an impressive accomplishment! It speaks directly to the heart and work ethic of our Gloversville team," said Superintendent of Schools David Halloran. "From the kitchen staff who prepared these meals to the team members who distributed them across our community, everyone stepped up to ensure our scholars received proper nutrition while school was out of session. That level of dedication is what makes our district special."
As the 2026-2027 school year begins, the GESD team remains committed to keeping our scholars healthy, focused, and ready to learn!
