When Jacob Sweeney, Connor Sweeney, and Alexander Payne crossed the finish line at Lake Placid on July 19, they weren't just completing one of the most grueling endurance events in the world-they were demonstrating the power of ambition, discipline, and community support.
The three Gloversville High School graduates-Jacob (Class of 2020), Alex (Class of 2023), and Connor (Class of 2024)-took on the formidable Ironman Lake Placid together. The 140.6-mile test demanded a 2.4-mile swim in Mirror Lake, a 112-mile bike leg through the Adirondack Mountains, and a full 26.2-mile marathon to cap it off. Jacob finished in 13:32.35, Connor in 14:48.21, and Alex in 16:00.19-marking the first full Ironman completion for all three.
For Jacob, the spark to tackle such a massive goal began right in the halls of Gloversville High School.
"Becoming an Ironman has been a dream of mine since high school," Jacob shared in a feature by Paul Wager for Mohawk Valley Sports. "I'm not exactly sure where that dream originated, but I have always admired the stories of determination, grit, and perseverance from athletes who completed the race. Seeing what they were able to accomplish through dedication, and hard work inspired me to pursue the same goal."
That mental toughness proved essential on race day when mechanical issues hit early on the bike leg, followed by severe cramping during the marathon. Jacob described the Lake Placid experience to Mohawk Valley Sports as "beautifully gruesome".
"You’re swimming 2.4 miles, biking 112 miles, and then running a full marathon-26.2 miles-all surrounded by the breathtaking scenery of the Adirondack Mountains. As beautiful as the course is, it was also the hardest thing I’ve ever done. Every mile tested me physically and mentally, but the atmosphere, the volunteers, and the spectators kept me moving forward."
That same overwhelming energy carried Alex and Connor through their own toughest moments on the course. Alex, who jumped into training right after his college baseball season, drew inspiration from the crowd and fellow competitors.
"The competition was incredible. It was inspiring to be surrounded by athletes of all ages and experience levels who had all worked so hard to get there," Alex told Mohawk Valley Sports. "The volunteers and spectators made a huge difference. They were encouraging from start to finish, especially during the run when I needed it most."
Connor echoed that sentiment, highlighting how powerful the spectator support felt during the grueling push.
"The atmosphere of the Ironman Lake Placid was unlike anything I’ve ever competed in. There were people you didn’t know screaming your name as you passed by them and you couldn’t help but feel motivated," Connor shared. "The race itself was humbling, the combination of the swim, bike, and run took everything I had to complete, but it was an amazing feeling to finish the race."
Beyond the finish line, their commitment to staying active continues. Jacob co-founded GSL Endurance, a local club created to help community members of all ages and fitness levels build friendships and embrace endurance sports.
For current GESD scholars watching their journey, Jacob, Alex, and Connor offer a living example of where goal setting, daily discipline, and a resilient mindset can lead. Whether in academics, athletics, or personal pursuits, success starts with deciding to show up, stay focused, and keep moving forward.
The entire Gloversville Enlarged School District community congratulates Jay, Alex, and Connor on this remarkable achievement!
