Although your child is not physically at school, we still would like them to feel supported.
Remember, during these stressful times many of our children will be confused or scared. You can help your child by using the following tips.
- Keeping adult conversation away from “little ears” – they will likely be alert to everything you say!
- Remaining calm and reassuring will help lessen the anxiety.
- Making yourself available for giving extra attention and time to talk about their concerns, fears, and questions. You may not have “all the answers”, but you can still comfort and assure your child.
- Be aware of what your child may be viewing on tv–youtube or social media–even news reports can be confusing and scary.
- Try to keep a normal routine as much as possible. They should still get up in the morning, wash, brush their teeth and have breakfast. Keeping to this schedule will help them when it’s time to return to school.
- Be honest about what may be unknown (like when we will see each other again at school).
- Watch your child for signs of illness such as fever, cough, or shortness of breath.
- Practice good hygiene and healthy habits. Not only should your child (and you!) remember to wash your hands often, but it is also important to allow everyone personal space (which is part of the “social distancing” we are hearing so much about). Avoid large groups whenever possible, wave your hands rather than shake or hug, thumbs up rather than high five!
