McNab Career Day 2006

On Friday, June 9, McNab-Meco Elementary School held Career Day 2006. The entire student body listened to and enthusiastically participated in activities with a variety of presenters from Fulton County and the surrounding upstate New York region. Click here to see images from the day.

Tom Ciaccio, teacher and coach, helped to set the stage for Career Day 2006 in Morning Program. Accompanying him were two former McNab students, Justin House and Jared Lanphere, who inspired students with their career aspirations. Both GHS juniors are already actively involved in working toward their future dreams. House is engaged in a career in stock car racing and Lanphere is pursuing a career in engineering.

Following the Morning Program assembly, students attended a variety of career sessions.
  • With the guidance of CVS pharmacist, Karen Mowrey, students used pharmacy tools to count out M&M "pills", put them in a medicine bottle and add the CVS label.
  • Engineer Katie Peters from Epimed International inspired students to consider a career in engineering and gave them a on-the-spot, cooperative creative challenge.
  • Designer Audrey Kline of Johnstown, displaying an array of fabric, magazines and photos, shared the creative joys, flexibility and demanding work ethic that come with owning one’s own studio.
  • Entrepreneur Don Blanchard, joined by his brother David, spoke about the responsibility, self-discipline, and fulfillment of operating multi-faceted businesses.
  • Jim Schreiner, realtor and high-end rustic furniture designer, displayed samples of his work and talked about his career journey from world class athletic competition to the work he does today.
  • Head Start teacher Mary Jo Lomanto led students in delightful pre-school songs and activities as an introduction to her presentation on early childhood education.
  • Professional actors and singers, Jillian Nyhan Zygo and Ajlan LaRock, displayed theater programs, head shots, reviews, and Web sites as they talked about the world of performance in live theater and on cruise ships.
  • Perry Paul excited students about catering while frying some delicious wings for them to enjoy.
  • Scott Eutermarks of Alpin Haus Service Department brought a pair of impressive jet skis for the students to examine as he spoke about his work.
  • Robin Hill, an occupational therapist, and Shelley Fennessey, a physical therapist, engaged students with the great needs and opportunities for employment in their respective fields.
  • Jen Huckans, hair designer with CW Designs, artfully braided hair and spoke about the career opportunity afforded her in high school through the HFM BOCES Career Development Center.
  • Adrienne Lanchantin, communication specialist, displayed the GESD Web site and piqued students’ imagination with possibilities of careers in communication and working with computers, the Internet and new developing technologies.

For the first time, second and third grades were included in the Career Day event. The six guests who participated with this young crowd included the following:

  • Sherry Gennett, Director of Children’s Services, Gloversville Public Library, who spoke about her work and the upcoming summer events for children at the library.
  • Mary Melucci, speech therapist, was positively magical in her creative presentation to students about the joys, training and skills required in her career.
  • Becky Montana, stable owner and horse breeder, brought along tiny, enchanting Mexicalli Rose, a favorite among the children.
  • Becky Paul, Price Chopper baker, decorated delicious cakes for each group as she spoke about her craft.
  • Ed Plumadore, Price Chopper Produce Manager, described his job as children examined an assortment of exotic fruit and vegetables.
  • Jamie Swezey, EMT with Fulton County Ambulance Service, taught about emergency medical services, while standing outside a Fulton County ambulance.

Students were inquisitive and eager to enjoy all facets of the day. Remarks from presenters, students and school staff, underscored how much everyone enjoyed the experience. Plans are already underway for Career Day 2007.
