Kingsborough Elementary is going to the Amazon Rain
Forest!
No joke! The students
at Kingsborough Elementary are traveling virtually to
several villages in and around the Amazon Rain Forest in
Ecuador, South America. Miss O’Brien has teamed up with
the organization One World Classroom. This group of
volunteers will travel to the Amazon in February to
conduct a cultural exchange project with US and
Ecuadorian schools.
Fourth and fifth grade students in the Kingsborough
Earth Club are filming and creating a documentary on the
culture of Kingsborough. The whole school will be
represented as this film travels with Miss O’Brien
thousands of miles to South America and into the rural
schools of the Amazon. In return, a film will be created
by Ecuadorian children to be shown back here in
Gloversville.
Fifth grade Earth Club students learned simple Spanish
phrases to communicate on film to the children in
Ecuador. Students learned how to speak about their
favorite subjects in school, favorite animals, and what
it is like to play in the snow. The fourth graders have
been working hard by going around the school and filming
various aspects of our day to day lives that show our
culture here in the USA.
Many teachers here are contributing to this project by
submitting student artwork, taking virtual tours of the
Amazon Rain Forest, singing and recording songs to be
sent down, making Valentines, and creating crafts and
gifts for the children in the rain forest.
Kingsborough students will receive daily E-Travel logs,
Google Earth tours, Amazon animal poetry, and even get
to video conference with Amazon students while Miss
O’Brien is there. If you or your child has ideas or
artwork to contribute, please contact Miss O’Brien.
