The first use of the imperfect is to talk about habitual actions in the past. It often translates to “used to _____” or “would _____”.
1. Every summer my family used to go to the beach in NJ.
Todos los veranos mi familia iba a la playa en Nueva Jersey.
2. When I was a kid my friend and I used to play with dolls.
Cuando yo era niña mi amiga y yo jugábamos con muñecas.
3. When José was a kid he used to climb trees, play with action figures and have fun. Cuando José era niño trepaba árboles, jugaba con figuras de acción y se divertía.

The second use of the imperfect is to talk about ongoing actions in the past and often translates to “was _____ing/were _____ing”.
1. My dad was singing while my mom was playing the piano.

The preterit and imperfect tenses con coexist in the same sentence.
1. I was talking on the phone when my little sister came in my room and asked me for a dollar.
Hablaba por teléfono cuando mi hermanita entró mi dormitorio y me pidió un dólar.
2. We were going to the beach but it began to rain.
Ibamos a la playa pero empezó a llover.
The third use of the imperfect is to describe in the past.
1. The man from the bank was tall, big and had long hair.
El hombre del banco era alto, grande y tenía el pelo largo.
2. It was the 25 of July and it was sunny.
Era el 25 de julio y hacía sol.
