Class Work and Homework for the Week of Dec. 1, 2008:

*Please see me as soon as possible if you have been absent. You will have work to make up.

English 9:

Monday - Complete a vocabulary activity during class in preparation for a reading of "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty," by James Thurber. See me for more information.

On Tuesday and Wednesday - Read the Thurber story and complete recalling, interpreting and applying questions at the end of the story (page 10).

Thursday and Friday - Watch parts of "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" on film. Your homework for the weekend will be to write a one-page letter to Walter Mitty. Be ready to share what you've written.

Looking ahead: On Monday we will read "The Lady or the Tiger" during class. We will also play "The Lady or the Tiger" game.

English 11:

Monday - Regents prep listening/note-taking activity on the work of Earnest Thompson, author of On Golden Pond. Make sure you complete the multiple-choice questions, too.

Tuesday - Work in pairs to write the report on Thompson as per the notes you took. You will need to pay special attention to the purpose of the task. This is explained on the handout for the writing.

Wednesday, Thursday and Friday- Read from the play On Golden Pond, and answer questions as they arise.  Please make sure to get a copy of the play if you are not here on these days. On Wednesday you will need to define ten of the vocabulary words for On Golden Pond. Also, if you took the rough draft home, you must complete the final draft and hand it in on Thursday.

On Thursday we will have a quick quiz to check for understanding.

On Monday of next week, we will assess our writing (the essays you hand to me on Thursday) using copies of rubrics straight from the Regents examination.

Looking ahead: On Tuesday we will have a quiz on On Golden Pond. Be ready!

Mrs. Alam's Page

Welcome

I teach English 9 and English 11. Below you will find information about each of the classes I teach, plus class work and homework for each. Want to know about work that's due? Click a class link below. Questions?  E-mail me at salam@gloversvilleschools.org

Descriptions of classes

ENGLISH 9 ----  The ninth grade curriculum gives freshmen  a broad-based exposure to various styles and types of literature and writing.  As part of their required readings, students read works that are dedicated to a wide range of human experiences. All freshmen study Romeo and Juliet, for instance.  Freshmen are walked through the basics of a research paper experience. Broad exposure to literature gives them the footing (and comfort) to continue their studies on more intricate levels in years to come.

ENGLISH 11 ---- The primary focus of English 11 is extensive preparation for the English Regents Examination, which is taken during the midterm period (in January).  The Regents is offered again in June of the junior year.  In this class, students read American literature, and they study American historical and social movements that help(ed) to create and shape American literature as we know it today.

"I do not read a book: I hold a conversation with the author." ~Elbert Hubbard
