Practical Language Outline

Course: Grade 12: Elective

This elective is geared toward students entering the 12th grade.  It encompasses many of the NYS learning standards.  It uses a rich selection of content as the basis for student performance.  Students create, analyze and organize documents. Students will briefly expand their reading of fiction while manipulating their writing styles to suit the practicality of our ever changing language.  The emphasis of the class is geared toward preparing students for college and life after high school.

Grammar Unit

This unit focuses on punctuation and grammar rules to enrich their understanding of the English language.  Students are given a section of grammar each week, where it will then be utilized throughout the week in assignments.  Assessment is then conducted on Friday for each individual section and a cumulative assessment will be given quarterly for continued support of the rules.  Students are also assessed in their creative writing pieces that are collected continually throughout the two semesters.

 Great Writing

This unit focuses on the student’s ability to clearly and concisely communicate their ideas.  Students examine the writing styles of different authors and emulate them within their own prose.  Students are then taught to effectively analyze their own writing through the use of a rubric, so that they may more clearly “see” the work that they are creating.  Emphasis is put on students creating their own voices in the prose that they are creating.  They take a further look at the importance of ideas, organization, word choice, sentence fluency, and conventions in their own writing.

Technical Writing

This unit focuses on the technical practical writing that students are going to need once they graduate high school.  Students will create a resume, so they could then manipulate these once they graduate to meet their specified objectives.  The format of formal business letters will be studied, so students may again use their knowledge to create cover letters to attach to their resume.  Further on throughout the unit, students will study two different research formats; American Psychological Association, and the Modern Language Association.  They will then create a research paper displaying their understanding of each format.

 Reflection Unit

This unit was developed, so that the students will broaden their own view of people.  Through their own reflection of other people, they will further their own view of themselves.  Students will read short pieces of fiction and non-fiction.  After reading these prose they will then reflect on the prose that they have read in journal format.

 Speeches

This unit will focus on public speaking skills.  Students will study, adapt, and utilize public speaking skills on a variety of topics. Students will present an impromptu, informational, persuasive, and a specialized speech within the classroom setting.  They will understand the importance of setting and audience on the language that is used.
