El presente progresivo

Significado – Estamos estudiando – We are studying. 

                Se usa este tiempo verbal para indicar lo que

                está ocurriendo ahora.

Formación – Este tiempo tiene dos partes (el verbo ESTAR y

                el gerundio/participio del presente).

Estar                                el gerundio(Take off –ar/-er/-ir)

Estoy        estamos                    + ando(-ar)

Estás        estáis                        + iendo(-er/-ir)

Está          están                        + yendo (vocales dobles)

Ejemplos

1.      I am watching TV, please be quiet.

Estoy mirando la tele.  Por favor, cállate.

2.     What are you doing, Juan?

¿Qué estás haciendo, Juan?

Los irregulares

  Los vocales dobles –se escribe una y no una I en el gerundio.

        Regla:  if after conjugating there are three vowels in a row

                and the second one is an unaccented I, change the I

                to a Y.  (exceptions:  two iis in a row.)  

1.      We are reading. – Estamos leyendo.  leiendo

2.    Yipes.  He’s falling. – Uf. Se está cayendo.  caiendo

3.    Mom, José is running away. – Mamá, José está huyendo.

Verbos de bota – verbos de bota -IR (en el presente)

                                cambian O - U, E – I en el gerundio.

1.      Shh.  I’m sleeping. – Sss.  Estoy durmiendo.

2.    The cook is boiling water. – El cocinero está hirviendo agua.
