Los perfectos

Los perfectos:  ALL perfect tenses are compound tenses using the helping verb HABER with the past participle of the main verb

 Presente Perfecto

 Significado- he hablado =  I have spoken

 Formación – conjugate the helping verb HABER in the present tense and follow it with the past participle of the main verb

He    hemos                       (-ar)  drop –ar and add –ado

Has  habéis       +              

Ha    han                           (-er/-ir)   drop –er/-ir and add –ido

 Los irregulares:

 HABER remains constant, but there are several irregular past participle forms.

 Abrir – abierto                   cubrir- cubierto         decir – dicho

Descubrir- descubierto      escribir- escrito

Volver- vuelto                    romper- roto             imprimir- impreso

Hacer- hecho                    caer- caído                leer- leído

Poner- puesto                    oír- oído                    morir- muerto

Ver- visto                          describir- descrito     traer- traído

 Ejemplo:

We have eaten dinner.    Hemos comido la cena.

Have you discovered the treasure?   Has descubierto el tesoro?

I have listened to the radio.   He escuchado el radio.

Past perfect - Pluscuamperfecto

 Significado – Había hablado = I had spoken

 Formación – conjugate the helping verb HABER in the imperfect and follow it with the past participle of the main verb

 Había        habíamos                                  (-ar) drop ending, add –ado

Habías      habíais              +              

Había        habían                               (-er/-ir) drop ending, add –ido

Los irregulares:     Haber remains constant.  The irregular past participles are the same as for the present perfect.

 Ejemplos: 

        By the time you got there we had eaten dinner.   Habíamos comido la cena cuando llegaste allí.

I had already bought you a gift when you asked me to buy you one    Ya te había comprado un regalo cuando me pediste que te comprara uno.

 Future Perfect

 Significado -  habría hablado = I will have spoken

 Formación – conjugate the helping verb HABER in the future tense and follow it with the past participle of the main verb.  Note the irregular formation of HABER in the future tense.

 Habré       habremos                  (-ar)  drop ending, add -ado

Habrás     habréis              +

Habrá       habrán                      (-er/-ir)  drop ending, add –ido

 Los Irregulares:  same as other perfect tenses

 Ejemplos:       

       By the time you call, we will have eaten dinner.  Habremos comido la cena.

       Will you have discovered the treasure after all your searching?  Habrás    

       descubierto el tesoro...?

       I already will have listened to the radio.  Ya habré escuchado el radio.

Conditional Perfect

 Significado -  Habría hablado = I would have spoken

 Formación – conjugate the helping verb HABER in the conditional tense and follow it with the past participle of the main verb.

Habría      habríamos                         (-ar)  drop ending, add -ado

Habrías     habríais             +

Habría      habrían                             (-er/-ir)  drop ending, add -ido

 Los Irregulares:  same as other perfect tenses

 Ejemplos:

        We would have eaten dinner.  Habríamos comido la cena.

        Would you have discovered the treasure?   Habrías descubierto el tesoro?

        I would have listened to the radio.  Habría escuchado el radio.
