Students Solve team
looks at school attendance
Students Solve is a youth
empowerment program in which students work together to develop
solutions to issues and problems facing the community. This year the
Gloversville High School Students Solve team addressed the issue of
school attendance.
During their project the group
addressed the problem of absenteeism and worked to develop a
solution based on an educational awareness program and rewards
system. The students did extensive research into the causes of high
school absenteeism, conducted a student survey on what the causes
for excessive absenteeism are and w could be done to motivate
students to attend school on a regular basis. The results of this
survey were compiled, and students when researched how other schools
in the country have addressed the issue of attendance. The students
then developed a program to encourage regular school attendance.
The group presented
their project to the Fulton County Board of Supervisors on April 5
at Fulton Montgomery Community College, and the received a $500
grant to put their plan into action. The High School Students Solve
team included 10th grade students Autumn Carey and Sarah Albanese
and 9th Grade Students Jill Brown, Claire Cellary, Meghan St Thomas,
Maria Mc Allister, and Francesca Gifford.
