National Pi Day a holiday in Gloversville

On Tuesday, March 14 students and staff at Gloversville High School celebrated the first annual Pi Day. Many were wearing the official Pi Day T-Shirt, with the Pi symbol on the back along with phrase, "Irrational but well-rounded." Other students chose to make their own shirts, pants and other clothing displaying the word or symbol for pi.

Students also did pi related activities in their math classes, and lined up after school to form a "pi line."

Math teacher Doral Lysiak said the idea of Pi Day is to do something fun and give the kids something to think about. She said it was great that so many kids were able to get involved in the event.

Pi Day is a national event honoring pi (π), an infinite decimal that refers to the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. It falls onto March 14, or 3/14, because the numbers 3.14 are the beginning of this never-ending decimal.

All high school students were invited to take part in the event. Starting March 8 students submitted poems, songs, posters and t-shirts, all of which contain pi as either a word or a symbol as well as at least one fact about pi. Students also took part in pi trivia.

Here are just some of the students who got dressed up for Pi Day.
