Students participate in Poetry Out Loud
Congratulations to Kerri
Cantelupe, the winner of the Poetry Out Loud competition
held on January 14 and to runner-up Katie Conrad. Kerri
and Katie will go on to represent GHS at the regional
level competition in Albany on Feb. 25th.
Poetry Out Loud, is a
nationally supported recitation contest that encourages
students to value the memorization and performance of
poetry. Five students took the stage: Bethany TenEyck,
Zaneta Young, Katie Conrad, Kerri Cantelupe and Jasmine
Osborne. Each contestant memorized and performed two
poems in front of a panel of judges.
Kerri delivered the poems "The Road Not Taken," by
Robert Frost and "Hope is the Thing with Feathers," by
Emily Dickinson. Katie recited the poems "Chord" by
Stuart Dybek and "The Chimney Sweeper: A Little Black
Thing Among the Snow" by William Blake.
"We are, indeed, proud of
all of the participants. All of the contestants have
shown their motivation and determination through
competing in the contest," says Ms. Alam, High School
English Teacher. She and Media Specialist, Ms. Bengle,
offered support and advisement for the students. The
panel of judges included Ms. Bengle, Mr. Giglio and Mrs.
Pepper.
