STRATEGIES FOR THE 3 PARTS OF THE NYS ELA TEST

 

 

 

    The New York State ELA assessment has three parts. In class students practice test-taking strategies for each of the different parts of the test -- Multiple Choice, Listening, and Reading/Writing. Below the strategies that students have been taught are listed for each of the 3 parts of the assessment. Day 1 – Book 1, Multiple Choice

  1. Go back and PROVE EVERY ANSWER!!!
  2. Use all the time!!!!!!
  3. If they don’t slow you down too much, use Chapter Titles as you read. You may chunk the material if you need to.

Day 2 – Listening

  1. Take notes during both readings on a T-chart. [Main Idea/Details]
  2. Use notes when answering the questions.
  3. Write a complete essay w/Intro, Body, Conclusion
  4. Fill the space for all answers.
  5. Use all the time. Go back and check over your notes to see if there are any details you can add.

Day 3—Reading /Writing

  1. Use Chapter titles as you read if they don't slow you down too much. You many chunk the material if you need to.
  2. Read the directions carefully, more than once.
  3. Answer all parts of the questions.
  4. Write a complete essay w/Intro, Body, Conclusion.
  5. Fill the space for all answers.
  6. Use all the time. Go back and check over your notes to see if there are any details you can add.
