Questions
about absences, early releases, and excuses
Often, parents are unsure what their responsibilities
are when their child is absent from school. The
Board of Education has a clear policy as to what
constitutes excused and unexcused absences, and what
parental actions are necessary to excuse a child from
school. A copy of this policy can be found
here.

Staying the course academically during the middle school year
From our Middle School Parent
Spot
For many kids, pre-adolescence can be a time of upheaval. Puberty kicks in, peer pressure becomes a significant factor, and new relationships take on major importance as children pull farther away from their families. With all this going on for preteens, is it any wonder that their desire to focus on academics might wane?
Studies show that many children's grades drop during the first year of middle school. It's at this point that they sometimes become less interested in studying and less self-assured about their abilities.

The amazing and ever changing brain:
How kids grow mentally during the middle years
From
our Middle School Parent Spot
The sometimes incomprehensible actions of middle schoolers can be
a mystery to parents. Take the child who, though you've just asked
him to complete a few simple tasks around the house, has
"mysteriously" forgotten your request and is instead
pouring himself a glass of milk as he begins to call a friend.
Believe it or not, this unpredictable behavior is often due to the
changing nature of a child's brain. At the beginning of the
decade, scientists at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH)
announced new research showing that there is a significant surge
in growth in the pre-adolescent brain. (Read

GET
ORGANIZED for school success
From
our Middle School Parent Spot
One of the biggest challenges students will face during their
middle school years will come from an unexpected source. It isn’t
making the basketball team or having to memorize a long list of
mathematical formulas. According to counselors and teachers, it’s
learning how to manage their time and stay organized. For the
first time, students are faced with having multiple teachers, each
with their own set of assignments and expectations. Juggling these
new academic relationships (not to mention their extracurricular
activities and social lives) can be overwhelming for some kids.
Helping children learn to keep track of their commitments will
save them a lot frustration and will put them on the road to
success in school – and life!

GMS'
Mission
Our
mission is to challenge each student to reach his or her full
potential through a quality education program. At Gloversville
Middle School, all students will be given the opportunity to
develop responsibility and to acquire knowledge and skills for
lifelong success.
Each student will be given a chance to build a strong self-concept
and to learn to respect individual differences in an environment
that is safe, orderly, positive and student centered. By achieving this mission, we will assist students in becoming
productive citizens who value learning.
