Safe Schools Plan

Gloversville School has had a Safe Schools Plan in place since July 2001. The plan is required of all school districts under Project SAVE (PDF document) legislation signed by former Gov. George Pataki in 2000. Project SAVE (Safe Schools Against Violence in Education) is a comprehensive legislation plan to promote safer and more effective learning environments within New York State schools.

School Building Security & Safety

In an effort to make our schools safe, we ask all parents and visitors to enter each school building through the front door/main office. Visitors are required to sign in and obtain a visitor's pass. Please be sure to sign out and hand back in the pass when leaving. In the case of an emergency, schools need to be able to account for the whereabouts of everyone in the building.

Visitors are asked to park in the designated spots in the school parking lots and to avoid parking in the fire safety lanes.

Does your family have an Emergency Plan in place?

Your family may not be together when disaster strikes, so it is important to have a plan in advance. How will you contact one another? How will you get back together? The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) offers information to help you plan. There is also information available specifically for children called Ready Kids.

Character Education

Gloversville Schools have an active Character Education program in the schools. Based on the habits and deeds that help people live and work together as families, friends, neighbors, and communities, it is a learning process that teaches core ethical values. These values include: Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring, and Citizenship. These values and traits are reinforced frequently during elementary Morning Programs and community outreach programs.

Health/Safety/Risk Management

Gloversville Schools participates in the Health/Safety/Rick Management Service provided by the Hamilton Fulton Montgomery BOCES. The mission of the program is to provide training, technical assistance, and leadership to schools to help create an educational environment that is a model for workplace safety and responsible behavior.

Automatic External Defibrillators

Public schools districts are required to have Automated External Defibrillators in each instructional school building and at all athletic events.

Sex Offender Notification/Registry

The Gloversville Police Department provides our schools with a list of names, photos and addresses of Level 2 and 3 convicted sex offenders living in the Gloversville Enlarged School District. The lists can be viewed by contacting the Gloversville Police Department at 736-2100. Information is also readily available on the New York State Registered Sex Offender web site.

Annual Go Home Early Drill

Each November, GESD sends its students home 15 minutes early to test its Emergency Management Plan. The "Go Home Early Drill" is required once a year by the New York State Education Department. The drill date is published in the school calendar. The purpose of the early dismissal drill is to test the effectiveness of the transportation and communications systems in the event of an emergency.

These notifications are provided to parents annually, by law.

Code of Conduct

Students, parents and school personnel must work together to ensure an orderly and pleasant working environment.

School Safety Committee

GESD has a School Safety Committee in place to continually review the district's Safe Schools Plan and Emergency Management Plan for dealing with and avoiding a crisis.
