To help them understand how careful an archaeologist must be, students in Mrs. Donovan's and Ms. Sturm's Social Studies classes were asked to excavate a cookie!
The cookie represented an archaeological site, and the chocolate chips were the artifacts. Each student used a toothpick to attempt to remove the chips without damaging them. They also mapped the cookie and chips on graph paper just like an archaeologist maps a site and artifacts.
Special guest, Michael Calvello, a paleontologist from Kansas with local connections (a Broadalbin-Perth High School graduate), spoke to students about his job and showed them some real fossils.
