No Name-calling Week at GMS
“The old saying, ‘Sticks and stones can break your bones, but names can never hurt you’ is a lie,” Assistant Principal Nikki Lent told GMS students during a recent assembly. “Words have power,” she said.
This is the message that Gloversville students heard as part of the middle school’s “No Name-Calling Week.”
While bullying is never tolerated at the school, the No-Name Calling week offered a forum to open up the conversation.
Each day had a different theme:
• Monday was “Walk a mile in someone else’s shoes” day and students were asked to wear two different shoes to remind them.
• Tuesday was “Appreciate each other’s differences” by wearing mismatched clothes.
• Wednesday was “National Blackout Bullying Day” and students and staff will be wearing all black clothing.
• On Thursday students were asked to wear their clothes backwards to represent “You can’t take your words back.”
• Friday everyone was asked to wear maroon and white to represent “GMS, we are all united against bullying.”
Other activities scheduled included: writing contests, art contests, morning messages about bullying, and classroom activities centered on the topic.
Winners of the contests were announced on the Friday of No Name Calling Week. Congratulations to:
