New nutrition standards for school meals

Posted 1/25/12

School district's across the state will be held to new nutrition standards for meals

On Wednesday, Jan. 20th, First Lady Michelle Obama visited Parklawn Elementary School in Alexandria, Virginia to talk about new regulations regarding school lunches. As part of the federal Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, school lunches must meet new strict federal guidelines in September. Under these guidelines, schools will be required to serve lunches that include offering dark green leafy vegetables, fruits, beans, whole grains and low fat milk.

A recent report released by the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) noted that nearly 32 percent of children in the U.S. ages 6 to 19 are overweight or obese. CLICK HERE for more information about the USDA and the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010.
