Teal Carpenter, Director of the School Nutrition Department at GESD, would like to remind teachers and parents that state health codes prohibit homemade foods in classrooms.
The policy, which has been enforced in Gloversville since 2007, is not meant to reduce the joy and celebrations of students; it's simply meant to keep them healthy, says Mrs. Carpenter. "We simply can't ensure the safety of food when we have no way of monitoring the kitchen it comes from," she says. "There are too many unknowns out there and that is why the state makes these policies and why we enforce them."
"Some have questioned over the years whether this stringent a policy is necessary," Mrs. Carpenter added, "but most of our parents understand that we are looking out for the best interest of their children and their safety."
