Joan Nicholson Esper
Joan Nicholson Esper is a 1946 graduate of Gloversville High School and a graduate of Syracuse University with a Bachelor of Nursing Degree. She worked in Rhode Island and then moved with her husband John back to Gloversville where she worked as a registered nurse in her husband’s office. As the mother of eight children, Joan was a sports mother. Not only did she “mother” her children as they participated in Gloversville sports, but she “mothered” their teammates and cheered at everyone’s successes and comforted them when disappointed. The eight Esper children named her the “Best Mom Ever Times 8.” Joan has one of the largest soup pots in the community. She is well known for bringing soup to those coming home from the hospital or to those experiencing crisis in their lives. She is there when a word of encouragement or reassurance is needed.

Joan brings hope and faith in a better community and truly believes in the ability of our young people to build a better tomorrow. She is unique in her ability to get the young people of our community involved in community activities outside the school environment.

"Gloversville was the wonderful community in which my parents decided to stay and “raise” their 2 children, my sister Anita and me. The then G’ville School District, as the city itself, was interested in the welfare and well being of its individual children or students. Parents and schools worked closely together, cooperating with and supporting each other for the growth of the student. This strong and unified background helped to form good work habits, respect for life and people, a good personal discipline, and a deep love and respect for God, country, family, and friends. This good base, for which I am so grateful, provided the stable base, upon which the rest of me developed and GREW! I remember so many of my Gloversville teachers so well and with deep gratitude. The teachers, administrators, and staff gave us generous amounts of personal attention, a most complimentary assessment. Coming back to Gloversville has been a real plus for me. We have “very fertile soil” here and a great potential for GROWTH!"
-Joan Nicholson Esper

Young people are key players in parades and community celebrations such as the annual tree lighting, winter carnival and essay contest, and fishing contest. Her garage door is a billboard of community events reminding us all to celebrate throughout the year from New Year’s Day to Christmas and in between the door is decorated to cheer on our athletic teams and to congratulate our graduates. She announces everything and always reminds us to honor those who have served our country.

Joan Esper’s caring and commitment to our community is demonstrated in her participation in the Boulevard, Estee Middle School and Gloversville High school PTA’s; and the choir of the Gloversville Senior Citizens Center. She served on the Board of Education from 1976 – 1981. She created and chaired the “Walk for the Gold” fundraiser for the Senior Citizen Center and is dedicated to the Society to Promote Revitalization in Gloversville (SPRING) Committee, having served as the Christmas, Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day parade chairs. She is a volunteer at Nathan Littauer Hospital. Joan has been honored as the SPRING Citizen of the Year, the Eckerd Pharmacy Outstanding Citizen and a life member of the Gloversville Central Council of the PTA.
