| “Carmi was born and raised in Gloversville. She lived her life without any desires to live elsewhere. I think she felt that Gloversville is special because of the people that live here. She loved people, and knew that this city is filled with good people. It is difficult to say which she enjoyed more – reminiscing with an old friend about growing up here, as there would be many great memories of times that were shared; or meeting someone new that was visiting or moving to the area, as she would serve as an ambassador who could instantly make a newcomer feel at home here.” – Matt Smullen |

Carmi Smullen was a lifelong resident of the Gloversville area. She was educated in the Gloversville Enlarged School District and completed her college education at Fulton Montgomery Community College and the Empire State College of the State University of New York. Her education in the area of counseling was applied to her work with the Family Counseling Center, being assigned to Gloversville Middle School.
Carmi recently passed away and is remembered as a person who typified the good heart and dedication of our community to children and their families.
She raised her own son, Matt, in Gloversville and saw him through the school system here as well. But beyond her own family, she saw all of Gloversville as an extension of her own family. She cared for many students in her program at the middle school and gave them someone whom they could trust as they learned to negotiate life in the teen age years. Many of these students were quite needy and Carmi would see that the young people had the little extras that made all the difference at times for them to feel a part of their group or school. At holidays, families in Carmi's care could count on a generous outpouring of kindness and support that brightened many a household in our area. As the war against terrorism gained momentum, Carmi undertook efforts at school to send support and encouragement to our troops overseas. In all of this work, you can see the mark of a woman of our community who sought out the needs of others and dedicated herself to the relief of those difficulties. This kind, community spirit is a model for the best of the heart of Gloversville.
As a participant in broader community activities, Carmi was a member of the board of the YWCA, Nathan Littauer Auxiliary and the Gloversville Free Library. The blend of her community involvement also indicates a sense of servicing the physical and emotional needs of our citizens and their families. Carmi Smullen, the counselor, the educator, the friend, the family member will be honored tonight as a fine example of those who give back to their community and display this generosity out of true love of their small city. Tonight we honor "Miss Fulton Street" as friends and family fondly recall her. Tonight we remember a great local lady.
