School Closings & Delays

Information regarding closings and delays can be found on the district homepage as they are announced.

School delays and closures

On occasion, weather and other emergency situations require the district to delay the start of the school day or close schools for the entire day. On rare occasions, it may also be necessary to dismiss schools early.

Schools can be delayed or closed because of poor road and/or weather conditions. Snow, ice and extreme cold are examples of weather-related reasons for delays and closures. Air temperatures around negative 15 degrees Fahrenheit and/or wind chills around negative 25 degrees Fahrenheit, as a general guide, will be evaluated by district officials when making delay and closure decisions.

When making closure and delay decisions, the district must consider conditions across the entire district, which covers an area of 82 square miles and includes the city of Gloversville, the town of Bleecker and parts of the towns of Johnstown, Caroga and Mayfield. Safety is the primary concern.

School delays and closures announcements

Closures and delays are announced on local television and radio stations, the school district website, the district Facebook page, through the School New Notifier (SNN) system, and through the district's automated phone messaging system (for parents and school employees).

Emergency Early Dismissals
If you believe there may be an emergency at the school and you need more information, please first check our website or Facebook page or listen to the radio or TV for details. Numerous phone calls to the school may hinder the staff's ability to deal with the situation.

School Bus

Morning closings may be announced as early as 5:30 a.m., but usually by 6:30 a.m.

Delayed openings mean all schedules will be delayed either one or two hours. Bus pickups will be approximately one or two hours later than the scheduled time. However, please continue to monitor all opening delays, as they could turn into school closings depending on the weather.

When the weather becomes inclement during the day and driving conditions become poor, please stay tuned to news about early dismissals through the methods discussed on this page. Please arrange for any changes in drop-off locations for students in the event of an emergency school closing in advance, if necessary. If you have not done so already, please contact your child's individual school for more information on how to make these arrangements.
