School delays and closures
On occasion, weather and other emergency situations require the district to delay the start of the school day or close schools for the entire day. On rare occasions, it may also be necessary to dismiss schools early.
Schools can be delayed or closed because of poor road and/or weather conditions. Snow, ice and extreme cold are examples of weather-related reasons for delays and closures. Extreme cold, defined generally as air temperatures around negative 15 degrees Fahrenheit and/or wind chills around negative 25 degrees Fahrenheit, is considered when deciding to close or delay.
When making closure and delay decisions, the district must consider conditions across the entire district, which covers an area of 82 square miles and includes the city of Gloversville, the town of Bleecker and parts of the towns of Johnstown, Caroga and Mayfield. Safety is the primary concern.
